World glaucoma week 2021 |
On the basis of the available data, there are approximately 11.2 million persons aged 40 years and older with glaucoma in India.
approximately 1.9 percent of the population is suffering from glaucoma in the world.
Glaucoma tends to run in families. In some people, scientists have identified genes related to high eye pressure and optic nerve damage.
Different types of glaucoma :
- Open-angle glaucoma
- Angle-closure glaucoma
- Normal-tension glaucoma
- Glaucoma in children
- Pigmentary glaucoma
What is glaucoma?
Glaucoma is one type of eye disease, which is major cause for blindness nowadays.
If proper diagnose is not done at a time then it may leads to major complications.
Glaucoma is generally increased pressure (intra ocular pressure) on eye, human eye acts like a baloon ,which works on optimum pressure, and it wants some minimum pressure for the proper function and if that pressure will increase then it’s called glaucoma.
The optimum intra ocular pressure is 10 to 18 mm-Hg, if the pressure will increase from 18 mm-Hg then it will makes obstruction of optic nerve and that type of obstruction directly affects on the nerve supply and blood supply of eye.
Now may ask that, How the pressure increases?
Generally intra ocular pressure is makes by the fluid of eye.
Eye fluid is continuously supplying by the source and which creates the pressure in eye and the excess fluid will go out automatically through drainage pathway.
So in this way there are 2 main reason for increasing intra ocular pressure,
- If the input of eye fluid is increase.
- If the blockage occurs in drainage pathway.
Ayurvedic perspective of glaucoma :
In ayurveda glaucoma is briefly mentioned in ancient texts and considered as kaphaj vyadhi due to increase of tarpak kapha and obstruction of shleshma waha strotas.
In some complicated condition of glaucoma like total blindness etc.. Pitta and vata dosha also plays role in glaucoma.
In ayurveda the first line of treatment for the glaucoma is the control by medicine and try to increase the vision by therapeutic processes like Shiro-dhara, takra-dhara and nasya. [selection of drugs in these treatments are depends on the nature (prakruti) of pateint] .
Akshi tarpan and Tarpan put paka is not administrate in Glaucoma.
First of all one should avoid the Kapha vardhak aahara for control the glaucoma like oily food etc..
Then I want to mention some common cause and worst habits for glaucoma : (we should avoid it to prevent glaucoma)
1. Tight necktie :
Researchers say that a too-tight necktie may increase the risk of glaucoma by boosting blood pressure inside the eyes to dangerous levels. Specifically, a tight necktie constricts neck veins and raises the pressure in the eyes.
2. Having high internal eye pressure (intraocular pressure) :
Intra ocular pressure more than 18 mm-Hg generally leads to glaucoma.
3. Having a family history of glaucoma :
Glaucoma tends to run in families. In some people, scientists have identified genes related to high eye pressure and optic nerve damage.
4. Having certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and sickle cell anemia.
5. Having corneas that are thin in the center.
Ayurvedic management of glaucoma :
We can not cure glaucoma completely, but we can handle it by control and by improving eye sights.
Modern medicine (allopathy) has some medicine which can reduce the intra ocular pressure, but it's not a complete solution of glaucoma because by reducing the pressure we can not improve the vision.
While on other hand, Ayurvedic treatments can improve the vision by it's therapeutic treatments mentioned in ancient texts.
Like..
1. Takra dhara :
|
Takra Dhara |
Takra Dhara is one of the forms of Shirodhara, which involves pouring medicated butter milk gently over the head.
Medicated butter milk with blend of herbs is poured gently.
Takra means butter milk, the diluted version of curd and Dhara means flow! This therapy is performed very similar to Shirodhara.
2. Nasya :
Nasya is a treatment procedure mentioned in Ayurvedic texts for such cleansing of this vital passage.
The name ‘nasya’ is evident that it is related to the nose (Nasika in Sanskrit).
It is a process by which substances ranging from medicated oils and ghee, powders, juices of raw herbs such as Brahmi, to honey, salt, milk, water, blood and meat soup are administered in prescribed doses through the nostrils.
All these treatments can only performed by ayurvedic physician having experience of panchkarma in clinic so, One should never perform that at home.
