Virudhha Āhara
What is Virudhha Āhara?
Viruddha Ahara is defined by Acharya Charaka as: certain diet and its combinations, which interrupts the metabolism of tissue, which inhibits the process of formation of tissue and which have the opposite property to the tissue are called as Viruddha Anna or incompatible diet.
The food which is wrong in combination, has undergone wrong processing, consumed in incorrect dose, and/or consumed in incorrect time of the day and in wrong season can also lead to Viruddha Ahara.
According to Ayurveda, every food has its own
rasa,virya and vipaka.
here, the rasa is taste of food, virya is a heating or cooling energy, and vipaka is the post digestive effect of food.
When two or more foods
having different rasa, virya and vipaka.. effect are combined, Agni (Digestive fire) can become overloaded, inhibiting the enzyme system and resulting in the production of toxins.
Yet, these same foods, if eaten
separately, might well stimulate agni, be digested more quickly and even help to burn Āma (Semi Digested food).
Poor combining can produce indigestion,
fermentation, putrefaction and gas formation and, if
prolonged, can lead to toxemia and disease.
